“The Tranquil Rose cruises on the rivers in the South of England, so her name resembles her surroundings.
Tranquil Rose is a wide beam narrow boat offering hotel accommodation on the rivers and canals of Southern England. Purpose built in 1973; she combines the classic looks of a traditional canal narrow boat together with the comfort of a wide beam vessel. She set off on her shake down voyage on Easter Saturday 14th April 1973, and as her first operator David Tebbett mentioned recently “… this was a very eventful trip as the boat and my inexperience resulted in many groundings especially along the Trent and Mersey canal which at that time was only dredged with a 15 feet wide channel, now much improved these days.” I would like agree with David regarding improvements, but unfortunately, running aground still occurs, but it all adds to the adventure of life on the waterways!

The day starts with an early morning tea or coffee served in your cabin (or the lounge if you are an early riser) followed by a light or full cooked breakfast at 8.30 am. The skipper will then outline the day ahead and we will set off around 9.00 – 9.30 am. As we cruise, morning tea, coffee and freshly baked biscuits will be served at 11 am in the saloon and open air well deck, and around midday we will usually find a mooring for lunch. Following a light lunch, we will set off once more. Afternoon tea, typically home-made cake with tea or coffee, will sometimes be served on the move, or we may have found a pleasant mooring for the night.
There will be plenty of time for you to go for a stroll, enjoy a pre–dinner drink from the bar, or just relax before dinner is served round our large dining table. Dinner is a relaxed three course meal, for which there is no need to dress up, unless you wish to do so. You are then free to socialise with fellow guests for the evening, maybe play some games or visit a local canal side pub. You can be sure that when you retire to your cabin, you’ll drift off to sleep to the gentle lap of water against the boat, reflecting on the day’s adventures.
During the day you can sit and relax, sketch or take photographs, study the wildlife and the architecture, or read and chat as the countryside unfolds before your eyes. With our knowledge of the waterways, and the maps, guides and books available to you in Tranquil Rose’s informative library, we will ensure that you enjoy your cruises to the full and point out items that may be of interest. If you feel more energetic, you can take a walk along the tow path or lend a hand to the crew at the locks – don’t worry, we have plenty of time to explain how they work!
